Safety TipsBarrow Marsh is a family run business which prides itself on its traditions and family-friendly feel. The Wakelin family has roots here going back to 1915 when the family moved into Barrow Marsh farmhouse. In 1918 Douglas Wakelin bought the farmhouse and land. Originally the land was used for farming but by the late 1930s what is now the chalet field first became available to campers. Visitors stayed in their tents while they built chalets and the beginnings of a caravan park took shape. In 1940 during WW2 all development was stopped and in 1944 the farmhouse was destroyed by a doodlebug and the family moved into Barrow Marsh bungalow.
After the war the business continued to develop to how it can be seen today. When Douglas Wakelin died in 1979 and his wife Ivy in 1980, their two sons, John and Peter, developed the business so that the vast majority of caravans and chalets were on mains sewerage and electricity. It has now developed into a well-established family site, including 129 caravans and 36 chalets.
